overheard at the used bookstore [Jan. 17th, 2007|04:00 pm]
[Current Mood | confused]
[Current Music |supersnackcake working hard as I take a leisurely day off]

overheard at a used bookstore this morning:

Clerk 1: Did you know there was a war between the Revolutionary and the Civil War? War of 1812?
Clerk 2: Really? Who was in it?
Clerk 1: I dunno. England. Canada, maybe.
Clerk 2: Oh.

I should have looked to see how big this store's historical fiction section is. "Crusades? Never heard of them. Put it in historical fiction."

Several of these adds were just discovered through my new myspace page. I think that every possible indie artist in the world has a myspace page. I was afraid to get into that nonsense, but myspace is a goldmine for new music.

Otter Pop Radio selling out? [Apr. 23rd, 2006|09:47 pm]
[Current Music |The Field Mice - Sensitive]

Finally, 26 new additions! As always, pretty much any catchy obscure and increasingly, not that obscure, pop tune from the last 45 years is a potential addition. Perhaps adding a fairly well-known song here and there is a good thing. It would be nice, after all, to have more than two listeners at any given time.

The Cat's Miaow

The Chesterf!elds
Close Lobsters
The Delgados
The Girls

no, I don't think it is. [Mar. 29th, 2006|10:13 pm]
[Current Music |Billy Bragg - A New England]

Is it physically possible to sing along to a Billy Bragg tune and not fall into his accent, even though you sound completely stupid and ridiculous (yes, you do, trust me) doing it?

a few updates this evening:

The Coral (2005)
Sibiria (2004)
Afraid of Stairs (2003)
Tahiti 80 (2002)
Panamaformat (2001)
Robyn Hitchcock (1988)

How exactly does one do the Tighten Up? [Mar. 27th, 2006|10:43 pm]
[Current Music |The Primitives - She Don't Need You]

There really needs to be a snotty punk band called The Gates McFadden Experience.

I've decided to occasionally add a few more popular (most likely older) pop tunes, just to see if that sort of thing works. I don't know if hearing Kodachrome and Tighten Up mixed in with the rest of the obscurities will be interesting or just sound stupid. Feel free to let me know either way.

Paper Moon 2006
The Wedding Present 2005
Sweet Apple Pie 2005
South Ambulance 2004
Pia Fraus 2001

I should put this tune up, too. [Mar. 19th, 2006|09:55 pm]
[Current Music |A Witness - I Love You Mr. Disposable Razors]

Finally, the conversion of all files is complete and the sound volume should be (should? it better freakin' be) consistent for all songs. 45 tracks are off, 41 new tracks are in.

Several of the new additions came from a fine mix that [info]lanky14 sent to [info]plainmabel some time ago, and included an excellent Depeche Mode cover by Estonian pop band Pia Fraus. This led me to discover that there is in fact an entire CD of Depeche Mode covers by Estonian artists.

New additions to the playlist are from The Legenday Bang, The Lovelies, The Church, Dislocation Dance, A Certain Ratio, Cinnamon, Daybehaviour, The Fall, Friends, Mekons, Komeda, The Magic Numbers, The Tempters, Sweden Japan Foundation, Amusement Parks On Fire, Cats On Fire, The Shapes, Teenage Fanclub, The Wild Swans, The Korgis, The Triffids, Honeycombs, Sandie Shaw, More-Tishans, The Creation, Ronnie Ong, Jacques Dutronc, Naomi & the Boys, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Beat Happening, Camera Obscura, Of Montreal, Smashing Orange, Go-Betweens, The Russian Futurists, The High Dials, The Leslies, Aerospace, Firehose, and Super Furry Animals.

Songs were released anytime between 1964 and 2006.

my favorite photo of me [Feb. 26th, 2006|10:55 am]
[Current Music |Dukes of Stratosphear - Shiny Cage]

Image hosting by Photobucket

Me in 1975. Is it any surprise I grew up to like Belle & Sebastian?

Many updates over the last few days - I'd really much rather play DJ than do homework for accounting classes.

Songs off new albums by Belle & Sebastian, Saint Etienne, and Postal Blue. I'd really like to have a bit more brand-new music on the station, but time and $$ issues are big hindrances to hearing everything out there.

Assorted tracks from the years 1968-2004 by Television Personalities, The Artisans, Autohaze, The Gants, The Mabuses, The Mighty Lemon Drops, The Dukes of Stratosphear, The Blue Nile, Blancmange, Orange Juice, Ultrasport, Sprites, The Essex Green, Carrots, The Pets, Holm, Delta, Spearmint, Pernice Brothers, Friends, Rocketship, The Cuff Links, Straitjacket Fits, Small Faces, The Christines, The Zombies, and I'm sure a couple more that I missed.

and I saw your eyes, I never realized something la la something [Feb. 11th, 2006|11:13 pm]
[Current Music |The Clientele - Rain]

Bob Collins of the Dentists has put up a website with all the usual ingredients: history, discography, a few downloadable tunes, etc. He claims there are at least 10 to 20 Dentists' fans out there that would be interested in the details, but I am certain there are at least 40. Any Dentists' fans should contact him through the website like I will do tomorrow and beg him to put up the lyrics. If all 40 of us do so, we just might learn the words to I Had An Excellent Dream.

Additions to the playlist are by:
The Action
A Drop In The Gray

[Current Music |The Aisler's Set - We Give Up]

19 new songs just added to the playlist, including that household name Rockformation Diskokugel on Apricot Records. Not that there's many household names on the playlist. No matter, you'll love otter pop radio.

That is, unless you like crap.

updates of glee [Dec. 27th, 2005|09:00 pm]
[Current Music |The Beatles - Every Little Thing]

Spurred on by a gift from [info]plainmabel , I've upgraded to a more "exciting" package from live 365, so I will be able to offer tunes at a sparkling 64 kbps, rather than the stinktastic 32 that I have now.

I'm also now able to see track ratings , so I've learned that Coalesced by For Against is the only 5-star song on my list. A worthy choice, as For Against are criminally obscure.

I've added a few tracks and reshuffled the playlist:

The Essence - The Cat - 1985
Five or Six - Portrait - 1982
Hal - Election Day - 1994
Laakso - Aussie Girl - 2002
Language of Flowers - It's Not You - 2004
The Montgolfier Brothers - Swings and Roundabouts - 2002
The New Pornographers - Sing Me Spanish Techno - 2005
The Steinbecks - Mens Suit Hire - 2003
Stella Rocket - Animals - 2004
The Wedding Present - Always the Quiet One - 2005

every sentence has its cost [Dec. 20th, 2005|11:10 pm]
[Current Music |Saint Etienne - She's The One]

a mere 3 additions tonight:

The Fairways - The Back of Her Hand - 2004
The Black Watch - Terrific - 1991
Maximo Park - The Coast Is Always Changing - 2005

Maximo Park seems to getting far less hype than other so-called new wave of new wave Gang of Four influenced blah blah bands, but they are easily one of the best. I only learned of them through a review in the last issue of The Big Takeover which read (excuse my paraphrasing):

Dear Matt,
Proceed directly to your local record store and immediately purchase the debut album by Maximo Park entitled A Certain Trigger. So certain are we that you'll like it, we promise to immediately cease publication and either cover ourselves in honey and roll around in fire ants or go write for Pitchfork, whichever you think is a worse fate.
Love,
Jack Rabid

They were right. When Franz Ferdinand's first album came out last year, I found myself repeating Take Me Out and Dark of the Matinee over and over, just a fantastic pair of songs. I'm doing the same now with Maximo Park's Apply Some Pressure and Graffiti.

current otter pop radio playlist [Dec. 18th, 2005|10:19 pm]
[Current Music |Saint Etienne - Amateur]

For your consideration, the initial playlist for otter pop radio, in alphabetical order. Every few days, new songs are added in, a few taken out, the order shuffled, etc. Positive and negative comments welcome.

Yes, I know it's stupid not to ignore "The" in an alphabetical list, but iTunes arranges my mp3 files that way, so it's easier for me to follow suit.

A Band of Bees - This Is The Land - 2005
Abercedarians - Come Out - 1984
Able Tasmans - My Name Is Peter Keen - 1995
Ambulance LTD - Stay Where You Are - 2004
Baby Lemonade - Secret Goldfish - 1987
B'ehl - Tag - 1997
Birdie - Let Her Go - 1999
Blueboy - Popkiss -1992 take me to the rest of the playlist )
